Tropicals in Kansas City

Sandy:

Hi There. I live in the midwest where we have four solid seasons of extreme weather. Extreme hot, extreme cold. How do I know, other than the expensive trial and error method which plants that are outside of our normal "5" zone may survive in the yard over the winter. I'm thinking mainly along the tropical plant lines - I'd hate to lose them in the winter!

The Plant Doctor:

Sandy:
If you are in zone 5 there are virtually no true tropicals that would survive the winter there.
Most tropical species are hardy to zone 8 or even 9.
That being said there have been some studies done on the subject and there is a book on the subject I believe it is called
" Palms won't grow here and other myths" by Francko.
I think you will find his research interesting.
Good Luck
