There's a campaign encourage the Obama's to install a Victory Garden in the White House. Progressive presidents and first ladies have made forays in some edible and eco-gardening before this. The Clinton's had a kitchen garden on the roof of the Whitehouse; Jimmy Carter had cooking herbs mixed in with perennials and in 1943, Eleanor Roosevelt installed a Victory Garden and during WWI, Woodrow Wilson brought in sheep to graze the lawn.
